Quick answers
- How many retreats are within a weekend's reach of Delhi?
- By our estimate, 43 retreats are within a day's drive of Delhi NCR: 8 within about two hours, 5 between two and four and a half, and 30 further out, mostly around Haridwar and Rishikesh.
- Can I do Rishikesh as a weekend retreat from Delhi?
- Yes, with an early start. It's about six hours by road by our estimate, or a morning train to Haridwar or Dehradun and an hour by cab. 12 of the 24 retreats we list around Rishikesh and Haridwar take short stays with any-day arrival. With a day of leave, it's far more relaxed.
- When is the best time for a retreat near Delhi?
- Most are at their best Oct–Mar. Avoid May and June, when the plains pass 40°C. Expect fog in December and January, and heavy crowds on the Haridwar road during the Kanwar Yatra in July and August.
- Are there retreats inside Delhi?
- Yes. Sri Aurobindo Ashram – Delhi Branch is in Delhi NCR itself, and there are ashrams and meditation centres in south Delhi, Najafgarh, Gurugram and Sonipat: good for a night or two without a long drive.

Making Rishikesh work in a weekend
Rishikesh and Haridwar hold most of the retreats within reach of Delhi, and 12 of them take short stays with any-day arrival: mostly ashrams with simple rooms and a daily routine of yoga, meditation and the evening aarti.
- By train: fast trains, including a morning Shatabdi, run from Delhi to Haridwar and Dehradun. Book early for Fridays; from there it's about an hour by cab to Rishikesh.
- By road: leave by 5 am on Saturday to beat the traffic, and plan to be back on the road by early afternoon on Sunday.
- By air: Dehradun's Jolly Grant airport is under an hour from Rishikesh.
- Better still: take Friday or Monday off. See the long weekends of 2026–27.

When to go
- October–November
- Pleasant days in the hills, and a good time to escape the city's air.
- December–January
- Sunny, cold days in Rishikesh; dense fog on the plains delays trains and makes highways risky at night.
- February–March
- The best of the year for most retreats around Delhi and Rishikesh.
- April–June
- Very hot on the plains. Go higher into the hills instead: see summer hill retreats.
- July–September
- Monsoon, with landslide risk on hill roads and Kanwar Yatra crowds on the Haridwar route in July and August.
In short: Feb–Apr and Sep–Nov are mild and clear. May–Jun passes 40°C; Jul–Aug brings heavy rain, no rafting and Kanwar Yatra crowds.
A simple two-night plan
- Friday night or Saturday dawn
- Train or drive out early; settle in by lunch.
- Saturday
- An afternoon class, a walk by the river, the evening aarti, an early night.
- Sunday
- Sunrise yoga or meditation, breakfast, a last session, and leave by early afternoon.
Budget: where retreats near Delhi publish a nightly price with a room, the median starting price is about ₹4,300 a night per person, and 15 are free or donation-based. See our costs guide and what to pack.
Which kind of weekend
- A night off from the city: an ashram or meditation centre in Delhi or Gurugram, for a quiet evening and an early-morning practice.
- A proper reset: two or three nights at an ashram in Rishikesh or Haridwar, with yoga, the river and the evening aarti.
- Rest for your body: a naturopathy or Ayurveda centre near Haridwar or Dehradun. Most prefer a week, so ask about short stays.
- Silence: a 10-day Vipassana course in Haryana or western Uttar Pradesh, with proper leave.
Travelling safely
If you're driving to Rishikesh, stop for a break halfway, and don't plan a long drive back straight after a silent or very early day.
Common questions
Can I get to a retreat near Delhi without a car?
Yes. City retreats are a metro or cab ride away; Haridwar and Dehradun have frequent trains from Delhi, and most ashrams can tell you how to get there from the station.
Is Rishikesh crowded at weekends?
The riverside around Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula is, especially on long weekends. Ashrams and retreats a little outside town, or in the quieter lanes, are calmer.
Where can I do a 10-day Vipassana course near Delhi?
There are several centres within a few hours in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, on fixed dates. See meditation retreats near Delhi and read your first Vipassana course.
Is a retreat a good escape from Delhi's winter air?
Many people use the hills for exactly that in November. Check the weather and air-quality forecasts, and book early, because the long weekends fill up.
