Quick answers

Where can I go on a retreat to escape the summer heat?
Into the hills. We list 30 hill retreats at their best in April or May: 25 in the Himalayan hills, from Dharamshala and Kumaon to Sikkim, and 5 in the southern hills such as Kodaikanal, Munnar and Coorg.
Is Rishikesh a good summer retreat?
Not in May and June, when it often passes 40°C. Rishikesh is lovely from February to April and again in autumn. For summer, go higher into Himachal or Kumaon.
When should I go: April, May or June?
April and May for the southern hills, before the monsoon arrives in early June. April to June for the Himalayan hills, before the rains in July. June to September for Ladakh.
Do I need to book early for May?
Yes. School holidays fill hill towns in May and June, and good retreats with few rooms book up weeks ahead. Six to eight weeks' notice is sensible.

Where the cool is

We count a retreat as a summer hill retreat when it sits in the Himalayan hills or in mountains elsewhere and is at its best in April or May. 30 of the retreats we list qualify:

AreaHill retreats good in Apr–MayBest months for most
Himachal Pradesh13Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov
Uttarakhand hills8Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov
Ladakh1May–Oct
Sikkim and the Darjeeling hills3Mar–May, Oct–Dec
Southern hills (Western Ghats, Nilgiris)5Oct–May
Computed from each listing's setting and best months. Rishikesh and Haridwar are left out: they're hot by May.

Browse them in retreats in the Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, or in the south through Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

What kind of retreat you'll find

Of the 30 summer hill retreats we list, 22 include meditation, 15 include yoga and 7 offer Ayurveda or naturopathy (a retreat can do more than one).

  • Meditation in Himachal. Dharamkot, Bir and the villages around Dharamshala are home to Buddhist and Vipassana centres with spring and early-summer courses. Many run on fixed dates and fill fast: see upcoming Vipassana courses.
  • Ashrams in Kumaon. Quiet ashrams in the hills around Almora, Nainital and Ramgarh hold study camps and retreats in the warmer months.
  • Yoga in the mountains. Courses in Dharamkot, Uttarkashi and Bir make the most of cool mornings.
  • Ayurveda and naturopathy. Centres near Palampur and Dharamshala in the north, and Munnar, Peermade and Coorg in the south, take guests through April and May.
  • Zen and silence in Kodaikanal. The Palani hills stay cool, with April and May among their driest months.

Timing it right

Southern hills
April and May are the sweet spot. The southwest monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June and soaks the Western Ghats until September.
Himachal and Kumaon
April to June is clear and pleasant, with July and August very wet. Mar–Jun and Sep–Nov are clearest. Jul–Aug brings landslide risk on hill roads; Dec–Feb is cold and some centres close.
Ladakh
June to September. Winters are severe, and many centres plan only for the summer months.
Sikkim and Darjeeling
March to May, before heavy monsoon rain from June.

Getting through the heat on the way

The hardest part of a summer hill retreat is often the drive out of the plains. A few precautions make it easier:

  • Travel early in the morning, and stop in the shade during the hottest hours.
  • Drink water regularly before you feel thirsty, and carry oral rehydration sachets.
  • Wear light, loose cotton and a hat; keep the sun off your neck.
  • Check India Meteorological Department heat warnings before you set off.
  • Never leave children, older people or pets in a parked car.

Crowds, roads and rooms

  • May and June are peak season in the hill towns, with traffic jams on weekends. Retreats a little outside the main towns are calmer.
  • Book well ahead, especially for places with only a few rooms or fixed course dates.
  • Mountain roads are slow. Allow far more time than the map says, and avoid driving after dark.
  • Altitude: if you go high, such as Ladakh, plan rest days on arrival, and talk to your doctor first if you have a heart or lung condition.

What to pack for a summer hill retreat

  • Cotton for the day, and a fleece or shawl for cool evenings and early sittings.
  • Strong sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat: the sun is fiercer at altitude.
  • A light rain jacket for afternoon showers, and shoes with grip.
  • A refillable bottle and rehydration sachets for the journey.

Common questions

Is Kerala too hot for a retreat in April and May?

The coast is hot and humid then, but the hills around Munnar and Peermade stay mild. For Ayurveda on the coast, the monsoon is the traditional season: see monsoon Ayurveda in Kerala.

Are summer hill retreats more expensive?

Often, because May and June are peak season in the hills. Ashrams and meditation centres keep their usual rates; resorts charge more. Our costs guide shows typical prices.

Can I do a 10-day Vipassana course in the hills in summer?

Yes. Himalayan Vipassana centres run courses through spring and summer, and they fill quickly. Check upcoming course dates, apply early on dhamma.org, and read your first Vipassana course.

Will it be cold at night in the hills?

Cool rather than cold. Above about 1,500 metres, April nights can drop to around 10°C or lower, and early-morning sittings feel chilly even in May. The southern hills are milder, but Kodaikanal and Munnar evenings still call for a light jacket.

What about June?

June is good in the Himalayan hills and Ladakh, but the monsoon arrives in the southern hills and the Konkan coast. Check each retreat's best months on its listing.
