Quick answers

How many retreats are within a weekend's reach of Mumbai and Pune?
By our estimate, 28 retreats are within a day's drive of Mumbai (12 within about three hours) and 29 of Pune (12 within three hours). 8 take short stays with any-day arrival and are within about four hours of one city or the other.
When is the best time for a retreat near Mumbai or Pune?
Most nearby retreats are at their best Oct–Feb. The monsoon (June to September) turns the Sahyadri green and misty, but brings heavy rain, slippery ghat roads and crowded weekends.
How do I get to a retreat from Mumbai or Pune?
Most people drive: the Mumbai–Pune Expressway runs past Lonavala and the Maval hills, and Nashik and Igatpuri are up the Mumbai–Nashik highway. Trains between Mumbai and Pune stop at Karjat and Lonavala, and Igatpuri is on the line to Nashik; a local cab covers the last stretch.
Can I do Vipassana on a weekend?
Not a first course: 10-day Vipassana courses near Mumbai and Pune, including at Igatpuri, need about twelve days. Short courses are only for people who have already done one. Read your first Vipassana course.

What's within reach

Within a day's drive of Mumbai we list 28 retreats: 17 retreat centres, 6 ashrams, 3 boutique stays and 2 luxury resorts. The Yoga Institute is in Mumbai itself. Dhamma Puñña (Pune City Vipassana Centre) is in Pune itself. For a two-night break, aim for one within about three hours.

  • Lonavala, Maval and Mulshi: the closest hills to both cities, with naturopathy centres, yoga institutes and a few luxury wellness resorts.
  • Igatpuri and Nashik: up the ghats from Mumbai, with Vipassana's best-known centre and wellness villages near Trimbak.
  • Pune itself: city-edge meditation and naturopathy centres you can reach on a Friday evening.
  • Palghar and Wada: quiet ashram stays north of Mumbai.

Which kind of weekend

A weekend is long enough to rest, practise and sleep properly, not for a full programme. Treat it as a reset, or as a trial run before a longer stay at the same place.

When to go

October–February
Cool, dry and clear: the best time for most retreats in the Sahyadri.
March–May
Hot on the plateau and in the plains; hill retreats stay a little cooler. Go early in the season.
June–September
The monsoon: waterfalls, mist and very green hills, but heavy rain and crowded weekends at Lonavala and the ghats.

In short: Oct–Feb is cool and pleasant. Jun–Sep is the green monsoon season: beautiful, wet, with slippery ghat roads and busy weekends.

Getting there

  • Leave early or late. Leave Mumbai or Pune by 6 am on Saturday, or after 9 pm on Friday, to miss the worst traffic out of the city.
  • The Expressway. The ghat section near Khandala and Lonavala is slow in fog and rain, and jammed on long weekends. Allow extra time.
  • Trains. Many Mumbai–Pune trains stop at Karjat and Lonavala; long-distance trains towards Nashik stop at Igatpuri. Book ahead for Friday evenings, and ask the retreat to arrange a cab from the station.
  • Last few kilometres. Village roads to hill retreats are narrow and steep. Arrive in daylight.

A simple two-night plan

Friday night or Saturday dawn
Drive out before the traffic. Aim to arrive by lunch.
Saturday
Settle in, a class or treatment, a slow walk, an early dinner and an early night. Phone in a drawer.
Sunday
Sunrise practice, a second session or consultation, a last quiet meal.
Sunday afternoon
Leave by about 3 pm, or stay the night and leave at dawn on Monday, to miss the evening rush back.

Budget: where retreats near Mumbai publish a nightly price with a room, the median starting price is about ₹1,600 a night per person; 11 near Mumbai are free or donation-based. See our costs guide, and what to pack.

Common questions

Can I get to a retreat near Mumbai without a car?

Yes, for many of them. Take a train to Karjat, Lonavala, Igatpuri or Nashik and ask the retreat to arrange a pickup. Retreats in Pune itself are easy by cab.

Is the monsoon a good time for a weekend retreat in the Sahyadri?

It's beautiful, and some Ayurveda centres consider it the best season for treatment. But expect rain most days, slippery roads and crowds at viewpoints. Book a place with indoor spaces and a covered walkway.

Where can I do a 10-day Vipassana course near Mumbai or Pune?

Several centres are within a few hours, including Igatpuri. They run on fixed dates; see meditation retreats near Mumbai and apply on dhamma.org.

Are retreats near Mumbai crowded at weekends?

The resort-style places near Lonavala and the Expressway can be, especially in the monsoon and on long weekends. Ashrams and centres further from the highway stay calmer. Book early for long weekends, or go midweek if you can.

What if I only have one night?

Pick a centre in Pune or within two hours of Mumbai that takes one-night stays, and leave very early. Even a single quiet night and a morning practice helps.
