Quick answers

How many retreats are within a weekend's reach of Bengaluru?
By our estimate, 30 retreats are within a day's drive of Bengaluru, 14 of them within about three hours. 8 take short stays with any-day arrival and are within about four hours.
Do I even need to leave the city?
Not always. Atma Darshan Yogashram is in Bengaluru itself, and several ashrams, meditation and naturopathy centres sit on Bengaluru's edge, along Kanakapura Road, Tumkur Road and near Whitefield and the airport. You can be there in an hour on a Friday evening.
When is the best time for a retreat near Bengaluru?
Most are at their best Oct–Feb. Bengaluru itself is mild for most of the year; the plains towards Tamil Nadu and Andhra get hot from March to May, and the Western Ghats are very wet from June to September.
Can I do a 10-day Vipassana course from Bengaluru?
Yes, there are Vipassana centres on the city's outskirts, but a first course takes about twelve days, so it's a leave plan, not a weekend. See upcoming course dates and read your first Vipassana course.

What's within reach

We list 30 retreats within a day's drive: 17 retreat centres, 9 ashrams, 2 boutique stays and 2 luxury resorts. They fall into three rings.

On the city's edge (under 1½ hours)
Ashrams and meditation centres off Kanakapura Road, naturopathy hospitals on Tumkur Road and at Jigani, and Ayurveda and wellness stays near Whitefield and Devanahalli.
A morning's drive (3–4 hours)
Mysuru's Ayurveda centres, the study centre at Rishi Valley and the ashram at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh.
A long day's drive (5–7 hours)
Tiruvannamalai's ashrams, Coorg, and the Coimbatore foothills. Better with a day of leave.

When to go

October–February
Cool mornings and dry days: the best time for almost everything nearby.
March–May
Bengaluru stays bearable, but the plains to the east and south get hot. Choose the city's edge or the hills.
June–September
Steady rain in the city, heavy rain in Coorg and the Ghats. Good for Ayurveda, less so for long drives.

In short: Oct–Feb is cool and dry. Mar–May gets hot on the plains; the hills (Coorg, Chikmagalur) stay mild. Jun–Sep is monsoon.

Beating the exit traffic

  • Leave before 6 am on Saturday, or after 9 pm on Friday. Getting out of the city can take longer than the highway drive.
  • Mysuru side: the Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway makes Mysuru an easy morning drive, and frequent trains run between the two cities.
  • Airport side: retreats near Devanahalli are easy if you're flying in from elsewhere.
  • Tamil Nadu and Andhra: buses and trains run to Tiruvannamalai and Puttaparthi; ask the retreat about the last stretch.
  • Coming back: Sunday evening traffic into the city is heavy. Leave after an early lunch, or stay till Monday dawn.

A simple two-night plan

Friday evening
Leave work early and head for a retreat on the city's edge, or set off at dawn on Saturday for something further.
Saturday
Morning class or consultation, a treatment or a long walk, an early dinner, phone off.
Sunday
Sunrise practice, a last session, a slow lunch; leave by mid-afternoon.

Budget: where retreats near Bengaluru publish a nightly price with a room, the median starting price is about ₹3,300 a night per person, and 9 are free or donation-based. See our costs guide and what to pack.

Which kind of weekend

  • To switch off: an ashram or meditation centre on the city's edge. Simple rooms, a routine, little to think about.
  • To rest your body: a naturopathy or Ayurveda centre, ideally for three nights or more.
  • To get away properly: Mysuru, Rishi Valley or Puttaparthi, three to four hours out, with a change of scene.
  • For a longer break: Tiruvannamalai or Coorg, with a day of leave. Our long weekends guide lists the dates.

Making a short stay count

  • Finish work on Friday and set an out-of-office reply, so nothing follows you there.
  • Leave the laptop at home and keep the phone in your room.
  • Follow the retreat's timetable, even the optional parts: the routine is what rests you.
  • Take Monday morning off if you can. One more quiet sunrise makes a real difference.
  • Before you leave, note what helped, and pencil in the next one.

Common questions

Can I get to these retreats without a car?

Many of them. City-edge retreats are a cab ride away, Mysuru and Tiruvannamalai are on train and bus routes, and most retreats can arrange a pickup from the station.

Is a retreat inside the city worth it?

Yes, if the place has a real routine and you leave your phone alone. You save hours of travel, which on a short weekend is most of the point.

Where can I do Ayurveda near Bengaluru?

There are Ayurveda centres on the city's edge and in Mysuru. Most programmes run a week or more; see Ayurveda retreats near Bengaluru and our Ayurveda basics.

What about Coorg or Chikmagalur?

Both are lovely, but five to six hours away by road, so they suit a long weekend better than a two-night break. In the monsoon the roads are slow and the rain heavy.

Are retreats near Bengaluru busy at weekends?

The popular ashrams fill up on long weekends and festival days. Book early, or go on a quieter weekend.
