What rules should I expect at an Indian ashram?

I don't want to accidentally offend anyone. What's normal?

Rules vary, but these are common, taken from the published guidelines of ashrams in our catalog:

• No alcohol, smoking or meat on the grounds. Some also discourage onion and garlic ([Parmarth Niketan](/retreats/parmarth-niketan), [Kaivalyadhama](/retreats/kaivalyadhama)).
• Modest dress: shoulders and knees covered. White is sometimes expected for classes or ceremonies.
• A daily schedule you're expected to follow. At [Sivananda Neyyar Dam](/retreats/sivananda-neyyar-dam) that means a 5:20 am wake-up, two yoga classes, satsangs and an hour of karma yoga (seva).
• Staying on campus. Kaivalyadhama asks guests not to leave during their stay; [Tushita](/retreats/tushita-meditation-centre) doesn't allow leaving the grounds during a course.
• No photos in certain areas. [Amritapuri](/retreats/amritapuri-ashram) doesn't allow photos or recordings on the grounds.
• Registration in advance. Several ashrams, including Amritapuri and [Sri Ramanasramam](/retreats/sri-ramanasramam), need you to register or apply before arriving.

None of it is meant to be harsh. The rules protect a shared atmosphere of practice. When in doubt, watch what long-term residents do, and ask.
